about

Look To Imber is the third compilation on Modern Aviation and the 14th release on the label. In it 12 of our favourite artists ruminate on loss, absence and the passage of time through the lens of an abandoned village in Wiltshire.

Imber is a real place. On 1 November 1943, the residents were informed that they were being evicted from their homes by the army, with the land taken by the military for use in the war effort. They were promised that one day they’d be allowed back, but that day never came. Today almost nothing of the village remains.

I (label owner Will) moved to Wiltshire, quite close to Salisbury Plain, just before the first lockdown. It’s a strange area - go out at night and it’s not uncommon to see the horizon lit up by bursts of weapons fire.

As things started to open up again, I started walking a lot on the perimeter path around the plain and couldn’t get the thought of the little village at its heart out of my mind. I visited again in 2021 and took many photos, from which the art for this album was created by artist Sarah Batchelor.

Look To Imber is not a concept album, not really. The artists were free to play with the theme or ignore it entirely. Some address the topic head on, some obliquely, others not at all. All the artists were chosen because their work has an indefinable atmosphere that just seemed to fit the mood I feel when I leave the comfort of home, go up onto the plain and look to Imber.
